  • Tanzania Pilot for UNICEF

2019 pilot in Morogoro, Tanzania for UNICEF

We studied the patternABC curriculum in a low-resource setting to demonstrate to the UNICEF Early Childhood Department, responsible for many of the SDG 4.6 standards for preschool curriculum, that patternABC could be successfully implemented in such settings, including with minimal training and with inexperienced teachers. Funding from the Radius Foundation.

  • Tools Competition pABC app

    pABC app 2023-2025
We built a basic iOS app to help kids view pictures and choose the patterns they see within them. The results are gathered for reflection on next sets of images, as a continuing feedback loop for the student, teacher, and school on supporting spatial literacy.

Funding from the Tools Competition Learning Science Research 2023.

  • Biomimicry textbook chapter

    NASA
From the annual NASA Biocene Conference (2015-2025), which explores biomimicry applications in aerospace, engineering, education and other fields, the Miocene lead Dr. Vikram Shyam decided to edit two volumes; one for aerospace and the second for materials and habitats.

  • NASA Collaborator

    NASA: External Collaborator
Periodic Table of Life, 2019 (PeTaL) uses the patternABC as a visual lens for the AI to recognize natural forms, a new model from BIDARA that adds more form recognition.
Additionally, NASA’s George Studor created an external Biomimicry unit at the International Council for Systems Engineers, the Natural Systems Working Group. As part of NSWG, Alex has been a co-author of the handbook meant by Studor to be an addendum to the NASA Handbook.
